What is photosynthesis?
- Process used by plants and organisms
- convert light energy (normally from the sun)
- convert into chemical energy -> release later to fuel organism activities
Where does photosynthesis occur?
In the chloroplast
Photosynthesis equation
Light energy + 6h20 + 6co2 -> c6h12o6 + 6o2
Which organisms photosynthesize?
- plants
- eukaryotic
- multicellular
Some protists e.g. algae
- mostly unicellular
- eukaryotic
Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae)
- Prokaryotes/unicellular
- most abundant
- oldest
- closest relative to chloroplasts of higher plants
Where does energy to power reaction come from?
Sun
What’s light energy used for in photosynthesis?`
Used to remove electrons from water and add carbon dioxide
Why is photosynthesis important?
- produces energy for all organisms
- Generates o2
- Takes in CO2 from atmosphere
chloroplast membrane structure
Double membrane - inner and outer
both phospholipid bilayers
inner membrane forms sack-like structures- thylakoids
If had methlyl group
will become chlorophyll a
if has aldehyde
will become chlorophyll b
