Q

where is most of the chloroplast found and why

A

in the palisade layer. Near the top of the leaf so get the most exposure to light

Q

what effect does temperature have on photosynthesis

A

higher temperature faster photosynthesis
until too warm (over about 45 degrees)
enzymes denatured
rate of photosynthesis rapidly decreases

Q

How to test a leaf for startch

A
  1. kill leaf boil it in water
  2. put leaf in boiling tube with ethanol heat in boiling bath (this gets rid of any chlorophyll) the leaf should now be a pale white colour
  3. rinse the leaf in cold water and add a few drops of iodine solution. if starch is present iodine will turn black

16
Q

name 3 main mineral ions for growth in plants

A

Nitrates
phosphates
potassium

magnesium is also needed but only in small amounts

17
Q

what do multicellular organisms need

A

transport systems

18
Q

what are plants two main transport systems

A

Xylem tubes

phloem tubes

19
Q

what do xylem tubes transport

A

The xylem carry water and mineral salts from the roots up the shoot to the leaves in the transpiration stream

20
Q

what do phloem tubes transport

A

The phloem transport sugars like sucrose, and amino acids from where they’re made in the leaves to other parts of the plant
this movement of food substances around the plant is known as translocation

21
Q

which part of the plant takes in water

A

root hair cells

22

23
Q

what process does a root hair cell use to absorb water

A

osmosis

24
Q

what is transpiration

A

the loss of water from the plant

25
Q

what causes transpiration

A

evaporation and diffusion

26
Q

what does transpiration do

A

create a slight shortage of water in the leaf so more is drawn up

27
Q

where does most transpiration occur

A

in the leaf

28
Q

what four main factors effect the rate of transpiration

A

Light intensity (brighter light the grater the transpiration)
Temperature (warmer transpiration happens faster)
Wind speed (higher wind speed higher level of transpiration)
Humidity (the drier the air around a leaf the faster transpiration happens )

29
Q

what is used to measure the rate of transpiration

A

a potometer
