Photosynthesis Flashcards
What color is the Chlorophyll a pigment?
Blue green
What color is the Chlorophyll b pigment?
Yellow/green
What color are the cartenoid pigments?
Orange / red
What color are xanthophyll pigments?
Yellow
What color are anthocyanin pigments?
Red / purple
What is chlorophyll?
The green pigment found in chloroplasts
Why do plants appear green?
Chlorophyll reflects the green light but absorbs all others
What are the overall products of the light-dependent reactions?
Oxygen, NADPH
What are the overall products of the Calvin cycle?
NADP+ and ADP+P
What pigment is found in Photosystem II?
P680
What pigment is found in Photosystem I?
P700
What two chemicals/enzymes are involved in the electron transport chain in photosynthesis?
Plastoquinone and Cytochrome complex plastocyanin
Is the electron transport chain exergonic or endergonic?
Exergonic
What is noncyclic electron flow?
When electrons are not recycled within the photosystems
Why would a plan go into cyclic electron flow?
When ATP levels are low
Which type of electron flow produces roughly equal amounts of NADPH and ATP?
Noncyclic
What are the “ins” of the light-dependent reactions?
Light
Water
ADP
NADP
What are the “outs” of the light-dependent reactions?
ATP
Oxygen
NADPH
Why is the Calvin cycle sometimes referred to as the “dark reactions?”
They don’t rely on photons from the sun
Where does the Calvin cycle occur?
The stroma
Where do the light-dependent reactions take place?
Thylakoid membrane
What is a granum?
A stack of thylakoids
What are the “ins” of the Calvin cycle?
ATP
CO2
NADPH
What are the “outs” of the Calvin cycle?
G3P
NADP+
What two chemicals/enzymes are involved in the ETC of PS I?
Ferrodoxin (Fd)
NADP+ reductase
What is photophosphorylation?
As electrons move from PS II to PS I, H+ are pumped into the thylakoid, creating a concentration gradient and producing ATP as the ATP synthase restores the concentration gradient
What is cyclic electron flow?
Basically Photosystem I over and over
What is the main purpose of the Calvin cycle?
To make sugar (G3P or glucose)
What is Phase 1 of the Calvin cycle?
Rubisco binds RuBP with CO2
What is Phase 2 of the Calvin cycle?
Reduction to form G3P
What is Phase 3 of the Calvin cycle?
Regenerate RuBP with some help from ATP
What is RuBP?
Ribulose BisPhosphate
