Photosynthesis Flashcards
Where is chlorophyll found and what does it do?
Chlorophyll is found in chloroplasts and absorbs light energy
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
Light
Carbon dioxide + water ➡️➡️➡️➡️➡️ Glucose +
Chlorophyll
Oxygen
How is light energy used?
To convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose
What is produce along with glucose?
Oxygen as a by-product
What can be used in an investigation to measure the rate of photosynthetic activity?
Production rate of oxygen
Give an example of a plant that can allow the measurement of oxygen (water plant)?
How?
Elodea (pondweed)
You would measure the amount of oxygen bubbles produced per minute
What is a limiting factor?
A factor that is controlling the rate of photosynthesis at a given time.
Increasing this factor will increase the rate of photosynthesis
When testing for the presence of starch in a leaf what is the first step?
Put leaf into boiling water in a beaker for 1 minute
Why when testing for starch do we out the leaf in a beaker of boiling water?
To break down the cell membrane so it’s easier for iodine to enter the cell and remove the chlorophyll
What happens when testing a leaf for starch, the leaf is took. Out of. The boiling water in beaker? (Step 2)
Put into boiling tube that’s half full of ethanol
When testing for starch where is the leaf in the boiling tube of half full ethanol placed?
In hot water for at least 10 minutes so that. The chlorophyll is dissolved and therefore the green colour fades
When testing for starch what happens after the boiling tube has been put in hot water for 10 mins?
Leaf is taken out and washed in the beaker of water
This softens the leaf
What is the last step to testing for starch within a leaf?
The leaf is placed on a white tile and covered in iodine
On the leaf, once iodine is put on it the starch will go…..
Dark blue-black
What are the 4 uses of glucose (produced from photosynthesis)?
- Release energy in respiration
- Changed to starch and stored
- Make cellulose (cell wall)
- Make proteins
