Active Transport Flashcards
What is required for active transport to take place?
ENERGY
What is active transport?
Opposite to osmosis
When the concentration is lower outside the cell it must be actively transported into the cell
It does this by moving AGAINST A CONCENTRATION GRADIENT.
What can active transport do that osmosis can’t?
Move salts and minerals from an area of LOW concentration to an area of HIGH concentration
What is an example of were active transport needs to take place?
Uptake of nitrate ions by root hair cells
What is the process of root hair cells taking up nitrate ions?
Nitrate ions can’t be diffused
Have to be actively transported
From soil water (low nitrate concentration) to inside plant cells (high nitrate concentration)
What will effect the rate of active transport?
Any factor that effects the rate of respiration as active transport requires energy and it gets it from respiration
Examples of things that get energy from respiration….
Glucose concentration (resp needs it)
Oxygen (aerobic needs it)
Temperature (enzymes controlling resp)
Toxic substances (e.g. cyanide stops resp)
