Digestive System Flashcards
What is the equation that the mouth does?
Starch ➡️➡️➡️➡️➡️➡️➡️➡️➡️➡️ maltose
What does the mouth do?
Enzyme Amylase is in syliva and breaks down starch into maltose
What enzyme is used to break down starch into maltose (mouth)?
CARBOHYDRASE
amylase
What happens in the oesophagus?
Food is moved down to stomach by a series of MUSCULAR CONTRACTIONS
PERISTALSIS
What happens in the stomach?
Has the enzyme PROTEASE which breaks down proteins to peptides.
(and rennin)
What is the equation that happens in the stomach?
Proteins ➡️➡️➡️➡️➡️➡️➡️ peptides
What enzyme is used to break down proteins to peptides (stomach)?
PROTEASE
What happens in the pancreas?
Secretes lipase, protease and carbohydrase into the small intestine
What is pancreatic lipase used for?
To break down fats into fatty acids and glycerol
Write the equation that pancreatic lipase does..
Fats ➡️➡️➡️➡️➡️➡️ fatty acids ➕ glycerol
PANCREATIC LIPASE
What does the liver do?
Produces BILE which helps with the digestion of FATS
Emulsifies the fat (splits it into small droplets) helping lipase as it’s a bigger surface area
What does the gall bladder do?
Stores bile and releases it into small intestine via BILE DUCT
What does the small intestine do?
Final products of digestion formed and then absorbed here
Glucose, amino acids, fatty acids and glycerol
What is VILLI?
Lines the wall of the SMALL intestine
Absorption happens here
Provides a large surface area so large absorption of food
Describe what the villi has..
Thin walls
Network of capillaries
Blood vessells
What does the large intestine do?
Re absorbs water that has been added into digestive juices
What does the Rectum do?
Stores faeces
What does the Anus do?
Egests faeces
What does digestion mean?
The breakdown of large insoluble molecules into small soluble molecules
What are the 3 stages of digestion?
DIGESTION
ABSORPTION
EGESTION
