Photosynthesis Flashcards
Uses of glucose
Energy in respiration, join together with cellulose to provide strength in cell walls, combine with nitrate ions to produce amino acids, stored as insoluble starch and stored in seeds as fats and oils
How is heat optimised in greenhouses
Glass structure traps heat, windows can be opened to provide ventilation and heaters can be used in winter
How is light optimised in greenhouses
Glass panes allow light, artificial lamps for night
How is CO2 optimised in greenhouses
Paraffin heaters can be used to increase temp and amount of carbon dioxide
How can the presence of starch in a plant be measured
Heat to remove waxy cuticle, heat in ethanol to remove colour, rinse in hot water to soften, add iodine solution and if it turns black/ blue starch is present
Why must colour be removed before testing with iodine
It Masks colour change
Why are some algal cells being considered as a biofuel
They are rich in oil
Example of lipid store in plants
Seeds
