Asexual And Sexual Reproduction Flashcards
What process does asexual reproduction use?
Mitosis
Stages of the cell cycle
Cell growth, genetic material is copied and chromosome, separation and cell division
Describe asexual reproduction
It requires only one parent due to gametes not being fused and genetic material not being mixed. This means offspring produced or genetically identical to the parent.
What are some organisms that use asexual reproduction?
Bacteria, fungi, some plants, potatoes, and daffodils
Describe sexual reproduction
Two parents are needed. The nuclei of male and female Gammys are fused to create a zygote this is called fertilisation. Gametes contain half the number of chromosomes (haploid). Female a male gait combined to create all the chromosomes (diploid) and a human embryo
Where are the gametes in animals ?
The sperm and egg
Where are the gametes in flowering plants
Pollen and eggs
What are the offspring produced in sexual reproduction like?
They are genetically different to each other and the parents
Describe the process of meiosis
Copies of genetic information are made, the cell divides twice to form four gait each with a single set of chromosomes and each Gamete are genetically different
What is the genome of an organism
The entire genetic material of that organism
What do human genomes enable us to do?
Search for genes linked to different types of disease, understand inherited disorders and their treatment and trace human migration patterns from the past
