photosynthesis Flashcards
What is photosynthesis
the conversion of water and carbon dioxide and energy to make glucose and oxygen
equation of photosynthesis
6CO2 + 6H2O —> C6H1202 + 6O2
Define Metabolic pathway
a series of small reactions controlled by enzymes
Define phsphorylation
adding phosphate to a molecule
Define photophosphorylation
adding phosphate using light
Define photolysis
splitting of a molecule using light
Define hydrolisis
splitting of a molecule using water
Define decarboxylation
removal of co2
Define dehydrogenation
removal of hydrogen
Define redox rections
reactions that involve reduction and oxidation
What are the stages of photosynthesis
light dependent reaction
light independent reaction
What happens in the light dependent reaction
Light energy is absorbed by PS II
this energy excites electrons in chlorophyll
electrons move to higher energy levels
As excited electrons leave PS II they must be replaced
electrons lose energy as they move along etc
this energy allows proton pumps to move protons into thylakoid
as there is a higher conc of protons in thylakoid than stroma this forms proton gradient
protons move down conc gradient into stroma via atp synthase
light energy is absorbed by PS I which excites electrons again
reduced NADP is formed
What happens in the light independent reaction
CO2 combines with RuBP to give an unstable 6-carbon compound
this is catalysed by rubisco
this breaks down quickly into 2 molecules of GP
GP turns into TP thanks to ATP from light dependent stage
TP converted into useful organic compounds
How is glucose made in plants
2 TP molecules
How are lipids made in plants
glycerol- synthesised from TP
fatty acids-synthesised from GP
