Photosynthesis Flashcards
Plants
Plants use light, the reaction that plants use to trap this light energy is called photosynthesis
Because photosynthesis takes in energy it is an example of an endothermic reaction
Photosynthesis takes place in the leaves of a plant, leaves contain the green chemical chlorophyll which absorbs light energy
What is the word equation for photosynthesis
carbon dioxide + water —————> glucose + oxygen
chlorophyll
. The plant takes carbon dioxide and water into the leaf
. Light energy is then absorbed by chlorophyll
. This light energy is used to convert carbon dioxide and water into sugar glucose and oxygen
What is the symbol equation for Photosynthesis
CO2 + H2O —–> C6H12O6 + O2
Light intensity (limiting factor)
. If we increase the light intensity and the rate of photosynthesis also increases, that tells us that the light intensity was limiting
. Meaning photosynthesis was not as fast as it could have been because there was not enough light
. At this point, light intensity was the limiting factor
. At some point there comes a point where if we increase light intensity, rate of photosynthesis doesn’t change meaning light intensity is no longer the limiting factor and something else is in short supply
What are the factors that can affect photosynthesis
. Light intensity
. Chlorophyll in the leaf
. Carbon Dioxide levels
. Temperature
What is photosynthesis
The reaction that plants use to trap light energy
What type of reaction is photosynthesis
An endothermic reaction because it takes in light energy
Where does photosynthesis take place in a plant
Photosynthesis takes place in the leaves of a plant, leaves contain the green chemical chlorophyll which absorbs light energy
