Exercise Flashcards
Why does the body need a lot of energy during exercise
For muscle contraction, the body has to react to the increased demand for energy, because the body needs more energy,
.aerobic respiration increases meaning the body cells require more oxygen, because of this, the breathing rate and volume increase getting more oxygen into the bloodstream,
. The heart rate also increases to pump this oxygenated blood around the body
Why can anaerobic respiration sometimes occur in the muscles
Sometimes, not enough oxygen can be supplied to the muscles especially if we are exercising hard, at this point, anaerobic respiration takes place in the muscles
What does anaerobic respiration lead up to
A build-up of lactic acid because the glucose is not oxygenated, during long periods of vigorous activity, the lactic acid causes the muscles to become fatigued stopping the muscles from contracting efficiently
How does the body get rid of the built up lactic acid
. The lactic acid is transported out of the muscles by the blood
. the lactic acid is then taken to the liver and converted back to glucose in a series of chemical reactions
. reacting with the accumulating lactic acid and removing it from the cells requires oxygen
What is oxygen debt
The amount of extra oxygen the body needs after exercise to deal with the accumulated lactic acid
This is why people continue breathing rapidly for some time after exercise
