photosynthesis Flashcards
What is the function of chlorophyll?
Contained in the chloroplasts, absorbs light energy for photosynthesis
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide + water»_space;» glucose + oxygen
What is the symbol equation for photosynthesis?
6CO2 + 6H2O»_space;»» C6H12O6 + 6O2
What four factors affect the rate of photosynthesis?
- Carbon dioxide concentration
- Light intensity
- Temperature
- Amount of chlorophyll
How does light intensity affect the rate of photosynthesis?
- At low light levels the rate of photosynthesis is slow,
- as there is a low amount of energy for reactions to occur
- as light intensity increases, rate increases
How does carbon dioxide concentration affect the rate of photosynthesis?
- Carbon dioxide is a reactant in photosynthesis
- As carbon dioxide concentration increases, rate of photosynthesis increases
How does temperature affect rate of photosynthesis?
- At low temperature, the rate of photosynthesis is limited by the number of collisions between substrate molecules and enzymes, as they have low kinetic energy
- As temp increases, kinetic energy increase and there are more collisions so rate increases
- At high temps rate decreases as enzymes are denatured
How does amount of chlorophyll affect rate of photosynthesis?
Leaves with more chlorophyll are better able to absorb light for photosynthesis, so rate is faster
What is a limiting factor?
- A factor which, if in short supply, limits or reduces the rate of photosynthesis.
- Other factors can be increased but the rate will remain the same until limiting factor is also increased
What are 5 uses for the glucose made during photosynthesis?
- Respiration
- Producing fat or oil for storage
- Producing insoluble starch for storage
- Producing amino acids for protein synthesis
- Producing cellulose to strengthen cell walls
