Photo Syn. Light Reactions Flashcards
Heterotrophs
Animals that must get energy from food instead of making their own
Biochemical Pathway
Series of chemical reactions where the product of one reaction is consumed in the next reaction
Light Reactions
One large stage in photosynthesis where energy is absorbed and is converted into chemical energy which is temporarily stored in ATP and energy intermediates called NADPH

Equation for photosynthesis
What is the chloroplast and its makings?
An organelle of plant cells that absorb light during photosynthesis. Consists of disc-like thylakoids that are in stacks called grana (granum). Stroma is the liquid and the chloroplast is surrounded by an inner and outer membrane
Chlorophyl A and B
The pigments located in thylakoids that absorb light. A absorbs more red-orange and B absorbs more blue. Main is A
Carotenoids
Secondary pigments that absorb the other colors of the visible spectrum.
Step one of Light Reactions
Light energy forces electrons to enter a higher energy level in the two chlorophyll a molecules of photosystem 2. Electrons are called excited. Chlorophyll A molecules have undergone oxidation. Some electrons made replaces the lost one in System 1
Step 2 of Light Reactions
Electron is accepted by the primary electron acceptor.
Step 3 Of Light Reactions
Primary electron acceptors donate the electrons to the first series of molecules known as the electron transport chain located in the thylakoid membrane. The energy that the electrons lose from being passed on repeatedly is used to power to proton pumps. Pumps H+
Step Four of the Light Reactions
Light is absorb in System 1 the same time as System 2. Primary electron acceptor of System 1 donates the electron to a different chain. There it is moved to the stroma and bonds with H+ to make NADPH out of NADP+
Last step of Light Reactions
The creation of ATP through chemiosmosis. Enzyme ATP synthase harnesses the great concentration of protons build up in the thylakoid relevant to the stroma. Enzyme adds a phosphate to ADP. Energy provided by proton movement, which is harnessed.
Autotrophs
Organisms that uses energy from sunlight or from chemical bonds in inorganic substances to make organic compounds.
