What is Phonology?
The sound of words
Name the 6 features of Phonology in order (ASAORR)
Alliteration, Sibilance, Anaphora, Onomatopoeia, Rhythm, Rhyme
What is Alliteration?
When two or more words start with the same letter
What is Assonance?
When two words have similar phonemes
What is Sibilance?
Words which create a hissing sound
Give 2 examples of Sibilance
Sip, Zip
What is Onomatopoeia?
When saying a word sounds like when the action is taking place
Give an example of Onomatopoeia
Sizzle
What is Rhythm?
When patterns of sounds are repeated
What is Rhyme?
When words in a sentence sound similar to other words
What are short vowel sounds?
Vowel sounds which are said phonetically
Give an example of a short vowel sound
‘a’ (Phonetically) for the letter ‘a’
What are long vowel sounds?
Vowel sounds which take longer to say
What are Fricatives?
Vowel sounds which are said with a slow exertion of air
What are Plosives?
Vowel sounds said with a quick expulsion of air
Give 5 examples of Fricative vowel sounds
s, v, h, f, c
Give 5 examples of Plosive vowel sounds

What are Cacophonic sounds?
Sounds that are harsh to the ear
What are Euphonic sounds?
Sounds that are pleasing to the ear
Give a Cacophonic sentence
The froth from his mouth gargled in a corrupting way

The whisper of the willows was soothing to the mind
Why does Poetry make use of phonemes?
Because it is read out loud
What is Rhetoric? (Not rhetorical questions) - they are pieces of media
Things like adverts or jingles
Why does Rhetoric make use of phonemes?
Because possible customers will hear them
