what is a phobia?
fear recognised as irrational, alongside avoidance and anticipatory anxiety
what is agoraphobia?
fear of places/situations that might make you panic/embarrassed/trapped
what is a specific phobia?
fear caused by presence/anticipation of specific object or situation
what is a social phobia?
fear of social or performance situations
what does exposure to a fear cause?
panic attack
in situations where phobia cannot be avoided, what may be used?
benzodiazepines
Tx of phobia?
CBT
SSRI/SNRI
what are the four aspects of PTSD?
intrusive symptoms
avoidance symptoms
negative alterations in cognition and mood
increased arousal and activity
what are intrusive symptoms?
thoughts
nightmares
flashbacks
emotional and physical distress after reminders
what are avoidance symptoms?
trauma related thoughts, feelings and reminders avoided
what are negative alterations in cognition and mood?
inability to recall trauma negative thoughts of self and world blame of self or others difficulty experiencing a positive affect decreased interest in actitivies isolation
what is increased arousal and activity?
irritability agression hypervigilence destructive/risky behaviour heightened startle reaction difficulty concentrating/sleeping
Tx of PSTD?
CBT
SSRIs + atypical antipsychotic
EMDR
