Phobia Treatments:Flooding Flashcards
What is flooding?
-put person with phobic stimulus for a prolonged time where no escape is possible.
What does reciprocal inhibition mean?
Can’t feel anxious and calm at the same time so eventually one cancels putt the other.
How is the nervous system affected by anxiety?
Anxiety causes the sympathetic nervous system to activate so you eventually have to calm down as can’t be anxious forever.
What happens after flooding is down?
Extinction- fear caused by the phobic stimulus not longer exists.
What are some weaknesses of flooding?
-spontaneous recovery may occur so not a permanent solution.
-violating protection from harm (psychologically distressing).
-systematic desensitisation may be a better treatment.
What are some strengths of flooding?
-research shows effective for treating ptsd.
-Better treatment than systematic desensitisation.
-research shows girl was driven round in car(phobic stimulus) and was hysterical and eventually calmed down.
