Pavlov's Study Flashcards
What was the 2 aims of the study?
-To find out if a reflexive behaviour can be produced in new situations through learning.
-To see if associating a reflex with a NS causes learning to happen producing a CR in new situations.
What was the procedure of Pavlov?
-Dogs placed in a sealed room and strapped to harness.
-Mouth linked to tube which drained and measured saliva.
-Pavlov started playing metronome before feeding and measuring saliva responce.
What was the sample of the study?
35 dogs, variety of breeds, raised in kennels in the lab.
What was the results of the study?
-When dogs heard metronome they began to salivate.
-Conditioned dogs salivated after 9 secs after hearing metronome.
-By 45 secs they had produced 11 drops of saliva.
What was the conclusion of the study?
-It is possible to condition a response to a neutral stimuli when paired with a reflex.
Why is the study not generalisable?
Used animals which cannot be generalised to human behaviour as different biology, so not sure if it will be the same.
How is the study reliable?
-Standardised procedure so can be repeated.
-Controlled for extraneous variables in a sealed room so can replicate environment.
Why is the study not valid?
-Low ecological validity as a lab study so not true to real life.
Why is the study valid?
Less extraneous variables as a lab study so can be sure IV is effecting DV.
How can the study be applied to real life?
Can explain phobias and how they are acquired through association to help develop treatment (flooding).
What are the problems with animal ethics?
Not a suitable environment-sealed room and cage.
-Caused dogs physical harm dur to drain in cheek.
-Could be done on humans.
