Needle phobia, previous mastectomy, AV fistula
Which bottles are drawn first?
Blood culture bottles
Blue (aerobic) then Red (anaerobic)

What is the colour bottle used for INR testing?
Light blue, sodium citrate
What bottle is used for drug levels, LFTs, TFTs, Lipids, U&Es
Gold, SST
What bottle is used for FBC, HBA1c

What bottle is used for viral serology?
Red, plain
What bottle is used for AAs, cortisol and PTH?
Green
What bottle is used for group and save?
Pink, EDTA

How do you prepare before inserting a cannula?
Gain consent etc
Gather equipment, wash hands, gloves, clean tray
Flush extension set and open packaging
Insert cannula
When do you change a cannula?
After 72hrs unless red/painful etc
What would mean you don’t put a cannula in someone’s arm?
AV fistula, mastectomy, cellulitis, stroke
