Phisological needs Flashcards
Need
Any condition within an organism that is essential for life,
growth, and well-being:
Physiological need
•Specific deficiency in the body that must be satisfied (essential for
survival):
Drive
•Psychological term
– behavioral manifestation
– the motor of behavior
– may or may not be based on need:
• low blod sugar level need yes, drive yes
• vitamin D deficiency need yes, drive no
• sacharinated water need no, drive yes
Oxygen
– involuntary control
– voluntary control motivational aspect
• environmental effects (ventilation, harm, underwater)
• breathing control procedures: yoga and other meditation techniques
• patients on ventilation machine
Temperature
•Cold blooded animals: body temperature changes with environment
(but: seek warmth, where more vigile)
•Warm blooded animals: ± stable body temperature despite changing
environmental temperature
In case of cold
•Vasoconstriction on body surface: decreasing heatdissipation
•Trembling: heat production
– 20% of energy is spent on movement itself
– 80% is transformed into heat
In case of warmth
•Great portion of chemical energy used in body is
transformed into heat, heating the tissues. This heat must
be lead away, by different way
Thirst
– Threshold of hypovolemic thirst: cca. ½%
Extrinsic motivation
Arises from environmental incentives and consequences:
Intrinsic motivation
Psychological need to be satisfied, innate striving for
growth: ”I want to”
