Philosophy-Telelogical arguement Flashcards
Teleological
To do something with something’s purpose or goal end point
Natural theology
Using our human reason to prove that God EXIST through HIS NATURE
Inductive Arguement
Argument that dictates that even if the premises are true, the conclusion does not necessarily have to be.
Deductive Arguement
Argument that dictates if the PREMISES are true, then the conclusion MUST be true. This is a logically sound argument
Qua regularity
Argument that is based on ORDER a and PREDICTABILITY
Aquinas Fifth Way Argument Premise 1
In the Natural World, we can see that EVERYTHING Follows NATUARL LAWS
Even things that are NOT CONSCIOUS
Aquinas Fifth Way Argument Premise 2
Things that follow NATURAL LAWS
Have a PURPOSE or a goal
Aquinas Fifth Way Argument Premise 3
If a THING CANNOT think for ITSELF
It does not have a GOAL OR PURPOSE unless DIRECTED BY a GUIDING HAND
Aquinas TELEOLOGICAL ANALOGY-Archer
For Aquinas the SAME WAY an ARCHER GUIDES the ARROW to a target
God GUIDES NATURAL BODIES to WHERE they SHOULD GO
The Natural Body NEEDs a PURPOSE, which is DIRECTED BY GOD
Paley Regularity observation
Paley saw that COMPLEX OBJECTS work with ORDER- which he believer must be The WORK OF A DESIGNER
Paley’s TA Puropse
Paley argued that everything has a puropse
E.g The EYE has been CONSTRUCTED to See
Paley Watch Analogy
A WATCH has COMPLEX PARTs with each having a FUNCTION which FIT TOGETHER for a PURPOSE
The WATCG therefore must have been designed by a WATCHMAKER
Similarly the UNIVERSE has PARTS that FUNCTION together for a PURPOSE
So the UNIVERSE must have a UNIVERSE MAKER
However due to the UNIVERSE being a far more INTRICATE and WONDERFUL design, it MUST have a DESIGNER that is GREATER than HUMAN
This MUST be GOD
Paley 5 evidences of DESIGN
Paley believed that if an OBJECT had all 5 CHARACTERISTICS then it must be DESIGNED
: Specific Materials which enable it to do its PURPOSE
:has Several COMPLEX PARTS
Criticisms of Teleological Argument- Hume Analogy
Hume Argues that to use an analogy you must COMPARE TWO things which are SIMILAR
E.G Builder DESIGNING HOUSE replicates its Design.
However Comparing the ENTIRE Universe to a HOUSE or WATCH design,
As there is no real COMPARISON
Criticisms of Teleological Argument- Hume Analogy Fails Why?
Can Be argued that the very concept of an Analogy is to bring understanding of things HUMANS cannot Necessarily COMPREHEND such as the UNIVERSE and GOD
