Philosophical Questions Flashcards
What is a theodicy?
An answer to to the question “why would a God who is omnipotent and omnibenevolent allow evil?”
What are the two types of evil?
Moral evil - murdering, stealing, lying, jealousy etc
Natural evil - earthquakes, tornadoes, floods etc
What is Augustinian theodicy?
Saint Augustan of Hippo argued that God was indeed omnibenevolent
He said evil and suffering is a consequence of original sin (Adam & Efe)
Adam and Eve are responsible for evil and suffering, not good
What is Irenaeus’ theory?
This world is the best of all possible worlds but it still has evil and suffering
This is because undeveloped humans cause evil and suffering
It is a perfect world because it allows us to develop
Not fully developed humans sin and are evil
We need to develop as humans
What is John Hicks theodicy?
Suffering occurs so we can spiritually develop.
Suffering makes our souls better
What is your theodicy?
Humans can’t be gods puppets
We need free will
We learn from our mistakes
We have to learn right and wrong from our past
Natural evil is caused by humans, we haven’t looked after our planet well enough
Past generations haven’t looked after the planet for the current generations
We can’t appreciate good without sadness and suffering
I think God has put us on this world to fight against the evil
Opposite will happen
We have to make up for the good like a wheel
I think God is all good, but we he left us some things to learn from and fight
We created moral evil so we need to get rid of it
I also believe that there must be an equal and opposite reaction and that is why evil has to exist
What is Paley’s argument for the existence of God?
Humans are like watches and are very complicated
They cannot be bashed by the elements but they have to be crafted by watchmakers in the same way humans are crafted by God
It is simple, easy to understand and logical
Paley’s doesn’t answer the question ‘who created God?’
He doesn’t address evolution
Humans went just created all at once, they evolved over time
What is Thomas Asquinas’ cosmological argument?
Everything has to come from something
You cannot make something out of nothing
There must have been a ‘first cause’ that created the ‘something’ the universe
The first cause is God
He doesn’t take into account that the universe could be eternal
What makes God eternal and the universe not?
If God isn’t eternal then what caused him
Not as logical as Paley’s argument
The universe could be eternal and therefore God wouldn’t need yo create it
There is some logic, dominos, which we can relate to
Not convinced but it makes some sense,
I am u sure what the thing that is eternal is
His argument isn’t strong enough to convince me
What are some examples of religious experience?
Epiphany Prayers being answered Miracles Dreams or visions Near - death experiences
What is a philosophical question?
You can’t look up the answer
It is usually something very complicated and philosophical e.g. Life,
love
It is yo be answered in your own opinion
