  • near to a destructive plate boundary whereby the dense oceanic crust of the Philippine plate is being subducted beneath the continental crust of the Eurasian plate

  • situated in latitudes between 5-20 degrees north of equator so vulnerable to typhoon. Coriolis effect is strong enough to rotate the low pressure system, trade winds will move westwards towards P
  • 7-10 annually eg. Haiyan in 2013- 6.5k dead
