Philippines- Multi hazardous Flashcards
1
Q
where is the Philippines?
A
a group of 7000 islands in the South China Sea in South-East Asia
2
Q
what is the tectonic position of the Philippines?
A
- near to a destructive plate boundary whereby the dense oceanic crust of the Philippine plate is being subducted beneath the continental crust of the Eurasian plate
3
Q
how is it at risk to EQs?
A
- the phil plate and the Eurasian plate can become locked together as the Phil plate is being subducted, causing build up and release of pressure
- 1990 EQ magnitude 7.8 killing 1.5k
4
Q
how is it at risk to landslides?
A
- can be triggered by tectonic activity
- high levels of rainfall
- 2006 Leyte island
5
Q
how is it at risk to typhoons?
A
- situated in latitudes between 5-20 degrees north of equator so vulnerable to typhoon. Coriolis effect is strong enough to rotate the low pressure system, trade winds will move westwards towards P
- 7-10 annually eg. Haiyan in 2013- 6.5k dead
6
Q
how is it at risk to tsunamis and flooding?
A
- submarine earthquakes
- wet season= typhoons/storm surges
