Philip Treacy Answers Flashcards
Function (treacy)
The function of this hat would be as a fashion accessory. Due to its delicate materials such as lightweight feathers it would be for occasional use only. You wouldn’t be able to wear it during harsh weather conditions due to the height of the design- it would be too fragile and might blow off or catch the wind
The hat doesn’t not have a traditional shape with a crown and a brim instead it is split into two sections. The section on the left is made of sinamay and curves round the form of the head comfortably. However the other half is made up of delicate feathers this creates a lightweight design that would be pinned onto the head to keep it in place. Therefor, this hat is not practical for everyday use
Style/visual impact (treacy)
Overall the style and aesthetic of this hat is sophisticated and elegant. There are a lot of varying textures in the design l. For example the leopard print section is made from tightly woven straw. This section looks sleek and curves around the head in a elegant style.
The styles of the patterns on the hat are quite busy and varied. For example the stripy feathers and dotted leopard print. However the patterns sit well together due to the harmonious colours treacy has used
Fitness for purpose (treacy)
The hat is fit for purpose as a fashion accessory. The sinamay section of the hat is secure yet flexible the feathered section is much more delicate showing that it would only be worn occasionally, to ensure the hat does not get damaged.
Overall the hat is not durable and would not withstand harsh weather conditions, it is fit for purpose as a fashion accessory. The hat is securely pinned onto the head and therefor the females hairstyle would have to be taken into consideration. The design is lightweight so it would not be too heavy on the wearers head.
Materials/techniques (treacy)
All of Tracey’s designs are created by hand and the process is labour intensive, he works with a small team of skilled people, there is no machinery in Tracey’s studio as he believes hat making is a craft.
The feathers used in Tracey’s hat are readily available, and the varying types of feathers all have different textures. There is a contrasting mix of string stiff feathers and others with soft and fluff that are more flyaway
Target market (treacy)
The target market for this hat would be a women ranging from the age of 30’s to more mature women. This is due to the sophisticated muted brown colour scheme; however the leopard print pattern may appeal to younger women looking for a hat for a special occasion.
A confident woman would wear this hat because the hat would grab people’s attention because of the height caused by the abrupt static feathers situated at the back of the hat. The design is quite sophisticated, contemporary and stylish, yet it is quite playful due to the arrangement of the feathers and the patterns used
