Jesuits (control of the church)

vow of obedience caused friction with pope and therefore the church
-national rivalries within the order appeared as individuals seemed to gain political support from their own countries
- Philip failed to nationalise the jesuits and bring them under the control of there inquisition
- however they posed little threat and jesuit colleges helped revive spanish catholicism

-focus stemmed from the development of calvinism especially from the proximity of the French calvinists - ban on imperial books without checks
- 1557, group of 130 including members of religious orders was discovered in seville
-Another group including former chaplain to Charles was found in Valladolid and were clearly protestant
Paul IV 1556-59
allied with France against Philip and had excommunicated Philip. Papacy alarmed with growing Spanish influence in Italy.

Philip blocked efforts to try and excommunicate Elizabeth . Also tried to prevent the bull of excommunication, hoping g for an anti French alliance
Pius V 1567-72
issued edit against bull fighting in 1967 but Philip and his archbishops ignored this

encouraged Philip in his plans to de throne Elizabeth causing all English protestants to regard catholics as traitors
Sixtus V 85-90
in 1588, complained at Philips slowness in dealing wit England but agreed to help fund the armada is invasion was successful

Heavily supported the French league in removing Henry from the French throne because Henry to not keep is promising of sticking to catholisicm, Philip was supportive of this

Counter reformation
- Council of Trent set up 1545 and concluded in 1563
represented the churches response to protestant teachings and attempts to reform the corruption and abuse within the church
condemned protestant teachings
papal interests and spanish interests clashed
Tridentine decrees accepted almost immediately thought Spain
Philip hesitant the decrees may reduce the power of the crown - highlights the weakness as it relied on the cooperation of secular rulers

Censorship (inquisition)
main form of censorship was spnaihs index of forbidden books published in 1559
1559 decree on Spanish uni students abroad but ban wasn’t a total one as there were still some students in areas of Europe
Elliot describes the censorship as having a negative effect on spanish intellect and Spain sealed itself off
