Phenomenology Flashcards
What does the sociologist say about the world
Husserl
The world only makes sense because we impose meaning and order on it by constructing mental categories that we use to file information coming from our senses
We obtain knowledge about the world through mental act of categorising and giving meaning to our experiences
What is meant by Typifications? and who says it
Schulz
The categories we use are shared by other members of society
Categories = typifications
The meaning of any given experience varies according to its social context, meanings are potentially unclear and unstable
Typifications stabilise meanings by ensuring everyone agrees on the meanings of things, without this, social order would not be achievable
What is meant by ‘recipe knowledge?’
Members of society have a shared ‘life world’ a stock of commonsense knowledge that we use to make sense of our experiences
Includes shared assumptions about the way things are, what certain situtions mean, what people’s motivations are
We follow this without thought
= recipe knowledge
