Phases If Matter Flashcards
Diffusion
the process of a substance spreading out to fill it container or environment
Pressure
a force exerted by the substance per unit area on another substance
Vaporization
The process of going from a liquid to a gas through evaporation or boiling
Phase diagram
a graphical representation of the physical states of a substance under different conditions of temperature and pressure
Enthalpy
When a substance changes at constant pressure, it tells how much heat and work was added or removed from the substance
Physical change
changes affecting the form of a chemical substance, but not its chemical composition
Deposition
The process of going a from a gas to a solid without passing through the liquid phase
Heat curve
A plot of temperature versus time, showing the amount of energy a substance has absorbed with increasing temperature
Temperature
The degree of hotness or coldness of a body or environment
Phase change
transitions between solid, liquid, and gaseous states of matter, as well as plasma in rare cases.
Sublimation
The process of going from a solid to a gas without going through the liquid phase
Triple point
the temperature and pressure at which solid, liquid, and vapor phases of a particular substance coexist in equilibrium
Kinetic molecular theory
describes a gas as a large number of submicroscopic particles, all of which are in constant, rapid, random motion
Condensation
Going from a gas to a liquid
Viscosity
a measure of a fluid’s resistance to flow
