Mixtures Flashcards
Homogeneous mixtures
A mixture that has the same proportions of its components throughout any given sample.
Unsaturated solution
A solution (with less solute than the saturated solution) that completely dissolves, leaving no remaining substances.
Heterogeneous mixture
has components whose proportions vary throughout the sample
Supersaturated solution
Supersaturation is a solution that contains more of the dissolved material than could be dissolved by the solvent under normal circumstances.
Saturated solution
contains the maximum concentration of a solute dissolved in the solvent
Distillation
Dissolving
Crystallization
the process by which a solid forms, where the atoms or molecules are highly organized into a structure known as a crystal
Insoluble
Cannot be dissolved
Concentration
refers to the amount of a substance per defined spaces
Solution
a special type of homogeneous mixture composed of two or more substances
Mixture
an aggregate of two or more substances that are not chemically united and that exist in no fixed proportion to each other.
Brownian Motion
The motion of colloids
Filtration
the action or process of filtering something.
Suspension
a heterogeneous mixture in which solute-like particles settle out of a solvent-like phase sometime after their introduction
Colloid
a colloid is a mixture in which one substance of microscopically dispersed insoluble or soluble particles is suspended throughout another substance
