Pharyx Flashcards
Define torus.
Bump of cartilage that helps the eustachian tube stay open
Define epiglottis.
Muscular flap that keeps food from entering the larynx
Which concha has its own bone?
The inferior concha
What’s unique about the cricoid cartilage.
It’s the only complete ring in the respiratory system.
What should occur for a rapid death when being hanged?
When being hanged properly, the dens of axis should pop out and crush the medulla/crush the spinal cord for a rapid death. Otherwise, one would strangle to death for 5 minutes.
Chicken bones can pierce the buccopharyngeal fascia, enter the retropharyngeal space, which can go all the way down to the heart and can cause an infection that can reach the heart.
What is the buccopharyngeal fascia?
The buccopharyngeal fascia - coats the back and surrounds the pharynx
What is the retropharyngeal space?
The retropharyngeal space - potential space that does not exist in the living
What is the Prevertebral fascia?
Prevertebral fascia - Coats the vertebral bodies and muscles at back of the pharynx
How can a chicken bone infect the heart?
Chicken bones can pierce the buccopharyngeal fascia and enter the retropharyngeal space, which extends all the way down to the heart and can cause an infection that can reach the heart.
What is the function of the stylohyoid ligament?
The stylohyoid ligament connects the styloid with the lesser horn of the hyoid.
What innervates the pharyngeal constrictors (superior, middle, and inferior)?
CN X
What in the insertion of the pharyngeal constrictors (superior, middle, and inferior)?
median raphe of pharynx
What in the action of the pharyngeal constrictors (superior, middle, and inferior)?
To prevent food from passing between the muscles; roll bolus and passes it down
What is the blood supply of the pharynx?
The ascending pharyngeal of the external carotid.
Origin of the Stylopharyngeus?
Medial side of the styloid process
Insertion of the Stylopharyngeus?
Upper border of the thyroid cartilage
Innervation of the Stylopharyngeus?
CN IX glossopharyngeal nerve
Action of the Stylopharyngeus?
Elevates the larynx and pharynx to aid in swallowing
As soon as the ___________________ reaches the jugular foramen it becomes the ______________, which drains the brain.
As soon as the sigmoid sinus reaches the jugular foramen it becomes the jugular vein, which drains the brain
**NO JUGULAR IN THE BRAIN
Origin of the Cricothyroid?
External branch of superior laryngeal branch of vagus nerve (X)
Insertion of the Cricothyroid?
thyroid cartilage
Innervation of the Cricothyroid?
External branch of superior laryngeal branch of vagus nerve (X)
Action of the Cricothyroid?
Lengthens and tenses vocal cords by tilting thyroid cartilage forwards
What are the functions of the branches of the superior laryngeal nerve from CN X?
The internal laryngeal nerve is sensory above the cords, but does no muscles. It pierces the thyrohyoid membrane.
The external laryngeal nerve is motor to cricothyroid; no sensory component.
