Pharynx Flashcards
Narrowest part of GIT
Pharyngitis esophageal junction
Pharynx is connected to middle ear via
Eustachian tube
❑Pharyngeal wall is
formed by;
✓Buccopharyngeal fascia
✓Muscular wall
✓Pharyngobasilar fascia
✓Mucosa
Outer Circular Layer consist of 3 muscles-
Superior constrictor >Middle
constrictor > Inferior constrictor
Inner Longitudinal Layer consist of 3 muscles-
> Stylopharyngeus >Salpingopharyngeus
Palatopharyngeus
Nerves except stylopharyngeus
Vagus
Stylopharyngeus nerve
Glossopharyngeal nerve
• Palatopharyngeal
sphincter
Superior Constrictor Muscle
Gaps on Lateral Wall
Above the margin of the
superior constrictor muscle
• Between superior & middle
constrictor muscles and
posterior border of mylohyoid
muscle
• Between middle & inferior
constrictor muscles
❑Superior gap (Sinus of Morgagni);
✓Tensor veli palatini muscle
✓Levator veli palatini muscle
✓Ascending palatine artery
✓Eustachian tube
❑Middle gap;
✓Stylopharyngeus muscle
✓Muscles, nerves and vessels
passing into and out of the oral
cavity
❑Inferior gap;
✓Internal laryngeal nerve and
vessels
There are two potential
spaces in relation to the
pharynx where abscesses can
form.
- Retropharyngeal space,
situated behind the
pharynx. - Parapharyngeal space,
situated on the side of
pharynx.
PARAPHARYNGEAL SPACE occupied by the
carotid vessels,
Internal jugular vein,
Deep cervical lymph nodes,
The last four cranial nerves and
Cervical sympathetic trunk.
