Pharses Flashcards
what is akinesia?
Akinesia: Absence or loss of power of voluntary movement
what is Apraxia?
Apraxia: loss of powerful movements despite the preservation of muscle power, sensation and coordination
what is agnosia?
Agnosia: lack of perceptual ability to recognise objects
what is aphasia?
Aphasia: Impaired communication by speech
what is areflexia
Areflexia: absence of reflexes; if neurological it may indicate severe neurological defect
what is ataxia?
Ataxia: loss of muscle coordination
what is Bradykinesis?
Bradykinesis: slowness of movements
what is Dysphagia
Dysphagia: difficulty swallowing
what is Dysarthria
Dysarthria: slowing or slurring speech due to loss of coordination of muscles of speech
what is Dysphonia?
Dysphonia: any disorder of voice production
what is Dysdiadochokinesia
Dysdiadochokinesia: Difficulty in doing repetitive movements
what is Dyslexia
Dyslexia: Showing a level of reading/writing below expected for measure of IQ
what is hypertonia
abnormally high muscle tone
what is hyporeflexia
Hyporeflexia: weak reflexes
what is paraplegia
Paraplegia: paralysis of both of the pair of limbs (usually legs)
what is hemiplegia
Hemiplegia: Paralysis of ipsilateral limb (arm and leg same side)
what is quadriplegia
Quadriplegia: paralysis of four limbs
what is Ophthalmoplegia
Ophthalmoplegia: weakness of the extraocular muscles of the eye
what is paresis
Paresis: muscle weakness
what is hemiparesis
Hemiparesis: Weakness of one side of the body or face
what is palsy
Palsy: old fashioned word for weakness
what is chorea
Chorea: involuntary spastic movement of the limbs or face e.g. Huntington’s
what is spasticity
Spasticity: rigidity or spasms of muscles with exaggeration of reflexes
what is rigidity
Rigidity: difficult muscle movement due to hypertonia
