Pharmacology Flashcards
What are the two types of drug interactions?
Synergy and Antagonism.
Define narrow therapeutic index.
The index between therapeutic and toxic effect.
Definition of pharmacokinetic.
The movement of drugs within the body.
What are the different mechanisms within pharmacokinetic?
Absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion.
Definition of pharmacodynamic.
Effects of drugs and the mechanism of their action.
What are the different mechanisms within pharmacodynamic?
Receptor based, signal transduction and physiological systems.
Definition of druggability.
The binding of the drug to a druggable target must alter the function of the target with a therapeutic benefit to the patient.
Definition of a receptor.
A component of a cell that interacts with a specific ligand and initiates a change of biochemical events leading to the ligands observed effects.
Three types of chemicals.
Neurotransmitters, autacoids and hormone.
