Pharmacodynamics Flashcards
What is pharmacodynamics?
Pharmacodynamics is the effects drugs have on the body
What is maximal efficacy?
The largest effect a dose can produce
What is relative potency?
The amount of drug needed to elicit an effect
What is affinity?
The strength of attraction between the drug and its receptor
What is intrinsic activity?
The ability of a drug to activate the receptor when it is bound
What is an agonist?
A drug or molecule that mimic’s the body’s regulatory molecules or promotes activation of the receptor
What is an antagonist?
A drug or molecule that prevents activation of a receptor, normally through the blockade of the receptor
What is the difference between competitive and noncompetitive antagonists?
Competitive antagonists reversibly bind with the receptors where as non-competitive antagonists irreversibly bind with the receptors
What is a partial agonists?
A drug or molecule that can lower the effectiveness of an agonist drug or work as an antagonist with a drug. Drug dependent on it’s function
