Pharmaceutical toxicology Flashcards
What is toxicology
Is the study of the harmful effects of chemical , biological and physical substances on biological systems
It can be divided into
Environmental
Forensic
Food
Occupational
Clinical
Environmental toxicology
Is the study of the harmful effects of manmade and natural chemicals on living organisms and environment
What is toxic substances control act
Is a federal law that regulates industrial chemicals that have the potential to be harmful to humans and the environment
The clean air act
Aims to reduce acid, ozone layer, improving the air quality and toxic pollutants
Occupational toxicology
Application of toxicology towards chemical and biological hazards in the workplace
Forensic toxicology
The determination of drug use , poisoning as part of a legal investigation
Food toxicology
Study of the nature , effects of toxic substances in food and their disease manifestation in humans
Clinical toxicology
deals with the identification of chemicals ,drugs or toxins that may affect patients
Preventive measures for poisons
Keep household chemicals locked and stored away
Meds should be taken as directed
Provisions of SOPs for handling and disposal of hazardous substances
Treatment of acute poisoning
If ingested then use emesis to remove poison but avoid if patient is drowsy, delirious etc
If absorbed then give activated charcoal
Common examples of poison
Drugs
Treatment of inhaled poison
Give artificial respiration
Treatment of acute poisoning in the hospital
Give supportive and symptomatic treatment
Administer antidote where possible
Lower conc of poison in the vital tissues
What is Adverse drug reaction
It is when an unintended response to a drug occurs at a dose normally given.
