Pharm Final: ScZ and Anti-psychotics Flashcards
What are positive symptoms of ScZ?
hallucinations, delusions, thought disorders, disorganized speech
What are negative symptoms of scz?
amotivation, social withdrawal, blunted affect, poor hygiene
What are typical drugs for ScZ?
effective in controlling positive sx, poorly tolerated and have major EPS sx
What are atypical drugs for ScZ?
used as 1st choice bc they work for positive and negative sx and have fewer EPS sx but more metabolic toxicities
What are depot formulas?
more likely for typical drugs if adherence is a problem, administer IM and serve as long release formulas
if you switch to this you must continue orals for 2 as it takes time for depot to kick in
What are examples of depots?
Fluphenazine, haloperidol
What are typical SE?
anticholinergic, cardiovascular (OTN), endocrine and EPS
What are early onset EPS sx?
dystonia, akathisia, pseudoparks
What are late onset sx?
dyskinesia, dystonia, akathisia
What is drug of choice for dystonia?
IM bendryl or benzotropine
Drug for akathisia?
propanalol, or anticholinergic
drug for pseudo?
anticholinergic
What is done for tardive dyskinesia?
no therapies have been shown to work, switch to clozapine
What are examples of atypical meds?
Apripprazole, clozapine, Risperidone
What are main SE for atypical?
- agranulocytosis- clozapine
- weight gain
- glucose dysregulation- switch to another agent
- elevated TG levels
- QT prolongation
