Pharm chapter 13 GB Flashcards
Amphetamines
A class of stimulant drugs that includes amphetamine sulfate. Typically used for focus and hyperactivity like ADHD
Analeptics
CNS stimulants that have a generalized effect on the brain stem and spinal cord which increase responsiveness to stimulate respiration. Typically used for respiratory depression.
Anorexiants
Drugs used to control or suppress an appetite
ADHD
A syndrome that can affect all ages. It is characterized by lack of ability to focus and/or hyperactive behavior.
Cataplexy
Sudden acute skeletal muscle weakness. Often associated with strong emotions and is an associated symptom in a lot of cases of narcolepsy
CNS stimulants
These drugs stimulate specific areas of the brain or spinal cord. Most of them stimulate excitatory neurons.
Ergot Alkaloids
These drugs are vasoconstrictors of vessels of the brain to relieve the pain of migraine headaches
Migraine
Recurring painful headache characterized by pulsating or throbbing quality, incapacitating pain, photophobia (avoiding light) and phonophobia (avoiding sound)
Narcolepsy
A sleep disorder characterized by sudden sleep attacks, sleep paralysis, and visual and auditory hallucinations at the onset of sleep
Serotonin receptor agonists
A class of CNS stimulants used to treat migraine headaches. These work by stimulating 5-hydroxytryptamine 1 receptors in the brain.
Sympathomimetic drugs
CNS stimulating drugs that mimic the actions of the sympathetic nervous system. Ex. Adrenergic drugs, noradrenergic drugs.
