Metronidazole- MOA
Acts as an electron acceptor forming cytotoxic compounds-> cell death
Metronidazole- Uses
ameobas, giardia, trichamonas, anaerobic cocci & Gram - bacilli,
Metronidazole- Adverse Effects
GI- N/V metallic taste, yeast infection of mouth, numbness & paraesthsias. Don’t take with alcohol!
Metronidazole- Drug interactions
Alcohol- aldehyde dehydrogenase inhibitor, alters GI flora & lowers seizure threshold.
Chloroquine- Indications
Eliminates trophozites in liver abscess & malaria.
Chloroquine- MOA
Binds to parasitized erythrocytes causing cell lysis
Chloroquine- Drug interactions
CYP 450, photo sensativity, lower seizure threshold
Chloroquine- SE
N/V/D, retinal and macular problems
Mebendazole- Indications
Nematodes- whipworm, hookworm, roundworm, pinworm
Mebendazole- MOA
interferes with microtubule assembly in parasite & decreases glucose uptake
Mebendazole- SE
Embryotoxic & teratogenic, abd pain, diarrhea
Mebendazole- Drug interactions
None
Pyrantel pamoate- Indications
In conjunction with mebendazole eliminates round, pin & hook worms
pyrantel pamoate- MOA
Blocks parasitic nicotinic receptors causing paralysis
