phagocytosis Flashcards
are phagocytes specific or non specific ?
non specific
what is a macrohage ?
a type of white blood cell that carries out phagocytosis
where are phagocytes found ?
naturally occur in blood and tissue
what is the first step of phagocytosis ?
the phagocytes in the blood and tissue and the chemicals or debris released by pathogens or abnormal (non self ) cells will attract .phagocytes will move towards these cells
what is the second step of phagocytosis?
there are many receptor binding points on the surface of phagocytes .They will attach to the chemicals or antigen on this pathogen via this receptor .
what is the 3rd step of phagocytosis ?
the phagocyte changes shape to move around and engulf the pathogen
what is the 4th step of phagocytosis ?
once engulfed the pathogen is contained with a phagosome vesicle
what is the 5th step of phagocytosis ?
a lysome within the phagocyte will fuse with the phagosome and release its contents
what is the 6th step of phagocytosis ?
the lysozyme enzyme is released into the phagosome .this is a lytic enzyme with hydrolyses the pathogen. The pathogen is destroyed
what is the 6th step of phagocytosis ?
phagocyte becomes a antigen presenting cell
