Define health literacy
The personal characteristics and social resources that allow individuals and communities to access, understand, appraise, and use information and services to make decisions about health.
Includes reading age but many other factors.
What are the three levels of health literacy?
Functional - basic reading, writing and numeracy skills to understand health information/system
Interactive - skills to pick out and discuss and apply the info you need
Critical - being able to analyse the information, decide if reliable or applicable.
What are some poor outcomes for low health literacy population?
Die younger
Struggle to take medication
Miss medical appointments
Long-term health conditions
