What are the different branches of the abdominal aorta?
Canned soup, really good in cans
Coeliac trunk, SMA, Renal arteries, Gonadal arteries, IMA, common iliac arteries
What muscle are the gonadal arteries associated with?
The psoas major
What are the different functional segments of the liver?
Each segment - supplied by own portion of the portal triad, can be removed independently.
For what task is AXR considered the gold standard of imaging?
Locating radio-opaque foreign objects
What are the primary tributaries of the hepatic portal system?
The hepatic portal vein is formed by the unification of the splenic vein and the SMV.
The IMV drains into the splenic vein
What are some common causes of portal hypertension?
Liver cancer
Liver cirrhosis
Splenic vein thrombosis
What type of haemorrhoids can be caused by portal hypertension?
Internal
From swelling of the inferior rectal veins.
What are the borders of the hepatocytic/Calots triangle?
What is the clinical significant of this triangle?
Superior - inferior surface of the liver
Medial - common hepatic duct
Inferior - cystic duct
Within this triangle is the cystic artery, this must be found and ligated in a cholecystectomy.
Describe the location of the spleen
Left hypochondriac region
At the level of ribs 9-10
Intraperitoneal organ
What features of the spleen make it susceptible to damage/rupture?
Delicate capsule
Easily punctured by a broken rib
Fairly mobile within the abdominal cavity.
What difficulties might an individual face in the event of removal of the spleen?
More likely to contract life threatening infections
More likely to experience blood clots
What artery can be affected by a perforated duodenal ulcer?
The gastroduodenal
What structures pass through the diaphragm at what vertebral level?
T8 - IVC and right phrenic nerve
T10 - oesophagus and ant/post vagal trunks
T12 - aorta, azygous vein and the thoracic duct
