PH, Acids Amd Bases Flashcards
1
Q
Give 4 importance of pH in biochemistry.
A
- Studying protein function
• Studying protein-protein interactions
• Studying other macromolecule behaviour
• Producing buffers for experimental research
2
Q
How is acidity of a solution measured?
A
By concentration of hydrogen ions.
3
Q
Describe pH scale.
A
0 is very acidic (lots of hydrogen ions) and 14 is very basic.
4
Q
Define acid.
A
A substance that release or donates hydrogen ions in a solution.
5
Q
Define base.
A
A which accepts hydrogen ions and releases hydroxyl ions.
6
Q
Structure of protein.
A
NH2-CHR-COOH.
Amino group acts as a base, accepts protons. Carboxylate group acts as an acid, donates protons.
