Atoms, Moles And Bonds Flashcards
What is moles?
Amount of substance of a system which contains as many elementary entities as there are atoms in 0.012kg of carbon 12. “Mol”
Equation for moles.
Amount (mol) = mass (g) / relative formula mass (g mol-1)
What is an isotope?
Variations of the same element due to the difference in neutron number.
Describe isotopes.
Radioactive because nucleus is unstable and decays to release energy in form of alpha, beta, and gamma radiation.
What is an ion?
Atoms with variations in their electrons.
Describe covalent bonding.
Sharing of electrons between non-metals.
Describe ionic bonding.
Transfer of electrons between metals and non-metals. Electrostatic forces between opposite charged ions.
Describe hydrogen bonding.
AKA dipole-dipole interaction. Weakest. Electrostatic attraction between polar groups.
Describe Van der waals interactions.
London dispersion. Weakest. Electron charge cloud is constantly moving hence temporary dipole.
Describe hydrophobic interactions.
Non-polar molecules that cannot interact with water.
OILRIG.
Oxidation is the loss of electrons, reduction is the gain of electrons.
