Q

What is acid?

A

A substance that produces H+ when it dissociates [breaks down].

Has more H+ ions than OH- ions.

Ex substances with a pH of 1 [essentially a substance with all H+ ions] has more H+ ions than those with a pH of 3.

Q

What is a buffer?

A

Substances that minimize excess acidity or alkalinity. .

It does not neutralize a reaction

HCL [acid in digestion] + NAHCO3 [sodium bicarbonate/baking soda]&raquo_space; NACL + H2CO3 [weak acid-Carbonic acid&raquo_space; can dissociate into CO2 and H2O]

Q

What is base?

A

A substance that produces OH- when it dissociates [breaks down].

Has more OH- ions than H+ ions.

Ex substances with a pH of 1 [essentially a substance with all H+ ions] has more OH- ions than those with a pH of 10.
