pH Flashcards
What is acid?
A substance that produces H+ when it dissociates [breaks down].
Has more H+ ions than OH- ions.
Ex substances with a pH of 1 [essentially a substance with all H+ ions] has more H+ ions than those with a pH of 3.
What is a neutral solution?
Same # of H+ as OH- .
Water [H–OH]
What is the PH scale?
A numerical expression of the relative proportion of H+ ions or OH- ions in a solution.
What is a neutralization reaction?
A reaction with the same # of H+ and OH-
HCL + NAOH»_space; NACL + H2O
What is a buffer?
Substances that minimize excess acidity or alkalinity. .
It does not neutralize a reaction
HCL [acid in digestion] + NAHCO3 [sodium bicarbonate/baking soda]»_space; NACL + H2CO3 [weak acid-Carbonic acid»_space; can dissociate into CO2 and H2O]
What is base?
A substance that produces OH- when it dissociates [breaks down].
Has more OH- ions than H+ ions.
Ex substances with a pH of 1 [essentially a substance with all H+ ions] has more OH- ions than those with a pH of 10.
