Characteristics of Living Things Flashcards
The Cell Theory
All living things are made up of cells.
Living things require energy in order to remain alive.
How do they obtain and utilize that energy?
Obtain energy from the breaking down of food (organic compounds) with oxygen (catabolic process)
They utilize this energy via metabolic (biochemical) reactions.
Food + O2»_space;> Energy + CO2
Living things exhibit growth and development
How does this occur?
Growth results from the accumulation of organic compounds within the organism (anabolic process)
Development is associated with changes in body shape with age.
Eg: sexual maturation//metamorphosis (change shape).
Living things responds to changes in the environment.
How?
Response to stimuli
Living things re create their kind.
How?
Reproduce
Adapts to changes in the environment
How?
Homeostasis (constant state) within individual organism.
Light exposure to the eye; body temperature; O2 levels; blood sugar levels;blood pressure.b
