pH Flashcards
What does the term pH describe?
How acidic or basic a material is
pH scale
0-14; 7 is neutral
What is the pH of most natural water?
between 4 and 9, with the majority being slightly basic
Why is pH important in wastewater?
It impacts chemical coagulation, water softening, chlorination, corrosiveness, and biological processes
What are the byproducts of neutralization?
water and salt
Procedure for testing pH using a pH meter
1) If needed, top off probe with KCL solution
2) Rinse probe with DI water and dry with Kim wipe
3) Turn meter on and calibrate with pH 4 and 10 solution, rinsing and drying between each solution
4) Read pH 7 to check calibration within 0.10.
5) Collect approximately 150 mL sample in 250 mL beaker
6) Add stir bar to sample, place on stir jack, and mix.
7) Read stable pH and record.
8) Rinse and dry probe then recheck pH 7.0
