Alkalinity Flashcards
What is alkalinity?
The ability of a solution to resist change towards a lower pH. Measured in mg CaCO3/L
How many parts of alkalinity are needed to remove one part of ammonia during nitrification?
7.14 parts of alkalinity to remove one part ammonia
Procedure for testing alkalinity
1) Calibrate pH meter appropriately
2) Measure 100mL of sample and transfer to a 250mL beaker
3) Measure the pH of the sample initially
4) Titrate the sample with the standard acid until pH 4.5 is obtained
5) Calculate (AxNx50000)/(mL sample)
What is the standard acid used for titrating during alkalinity testing?
.0200N acid for samples 20-500 mg/L alkalinity
.1000N acid for samples above 500 mg/L alkalinity
Typically sulfuric acid
