Glassware & Testing Apparatus Flashcards
Analytical Balance
Precision scale with glass enclosed pan and digital readout. Determines mass to 4 decimal places (1 ten-thousandth of a gram)
Beaker
Open top, uniform width with pour spout. Used for holding samples or transferring solutions. Not used for specific measurements.
Buret
Open top, long and narrow with precise graduations and a stopcock. Hold solutions used in titration to deliver precise amounts.
BOD Bottle
Ground glass neck with a stopper, 300mL volume. Holds sample and dilution H20 for BOD or DO.
Buret Stand
Heavy rectangular base with upright rod and pinch clamps. Holds burets during titration.
Crucible
(Common brands include Gooch or Coors). Open top ceramic vessel with tapered profile and perforated bottom. Used with glass fiber filter to capture TSS while passing TDS. Capable of heating to 600°C.
Crucible Tongs
Scissor-like metal clamp used for picking up crucible or evaporating dish.
Evaporating dish
Open top ceramic bowl used for holding samples during low temperature evaporation and high temperature drying and firing. Up to 600°C.
Desicator
Thick glass jar with ground glass flange and cover. Stopcock grease seals cover. Cooling rack with desiccant below. Allows hot dry vessels to cool without collecting moisture.
Drying Oven
Air convection electric heat driven oven with thermostat and thermometer. Used for evaporating or drying samples. Typical range is Room temperature to 200°C.
Erlenmeyer Flask
Named after Emil Erlenmeyer. Open top inverted funnel shaped glass used to hold samples and reagents during analysis. Not used for specific volume measurements.
Eye dropper
Plastic or glass with bulb end used for taking up and dispensing small amounts of reagent, titrant, or sample. Some are graduated for approximate measurements.
Graduated Cylinder
Open top glass cylinder with wide base and precise graduations used to accurately measure specific volumes of sample or reagent solutions.
Pipet
Open top thin glass tubes with precise graduations. Used for taking up specific quantities of sample or reagent.
Volumetric pipet
Open top thin glass tube with bulbous middle section and one graduation mark. Used to dispense one specific volume.
