What is a PGD (Patient group directions)???
A PGD is a written direction that allow the supply of a specified medicine or medicines by professionals.
Where can a PGD be used???
NHS trusts
Primary care trusts
GP and dental practices
NHS funded family clinics
How can a PGD be created???
Should be put together by a multi-disciplinary group including a doctor, a pharmacist and a representative of any professional group expected to supply medicines under the PGD.
Who can supply a PGD???
Chiropodists and podiatrists Dental hygienists Dental therapists Dieticians Midwives Nurses Occupational therapists Optometrists
Who can supply a PGD 2???
Orthoptists Orthotists and prosthetists Paramedics Pharmacists Physiotherapists Radiographers Speech and language therapists
What’s in a PGD???
The name of the business who owns the direction.
The start and end date of the PGD.
A description of the medicine(s).
The class of the health professional who can supply or administer the medicine.
What’s in a PGD 2???
Signature of a doctor or dentist and a pharmacist.
Signature by an appropriate organisation.
The clinical condition or situation to which the direction applies.
What’s in a PGD 3???
A description of patients excluded from treatment under the direction.
Info on when you should get more advice.
Details of appropriate dosage, quantity, formulation, strength etc.
Warnings and follow up actions.
