PF - Narrative Flashcards
How could we describe the narrative?
Episodic, circular and broadly in 3 acts.
What are the 3 interrelated strands?
Cleaning up the car, entertain Mia without temptation and stealing the gold watch
Why did Tarantino choose to construct the narrative this way?
Order is arranged to give audience more active viewing experience. Structure is not clear until final resolution, therefore each scene has to be interpreted without understanding of the wide picture. Spectator engages in a playful way and partakes in forming hypotheses.
How can we suggest that the narrative comes full circle?
The film open and closes in the same setting, featuring the same minor characters.
How could we suggest that the narrative is experimental?
It is unusually convoluted and has an experimental treatment of time. Tarantino and Menke structured the narrative in a way that subverts the norm of mainstream cinema.
How does the narrative twist surrounding Vincent’s death affect the character?
The spectator is left with a sense of satisification because Jules and Vincent leave the scene with the moral high ground
How is the ending typical of the noir genre?
The ending is a conventional resolution to a noir themed film - the anti-heroes get the job done and leave morally and physically intact
Why might the audience be left with a conflicted emotional response by the non-linear narrative?
Aware of Vincent’s subsequent death forces us to search for a more comforting resolution that’s not there - makes its satisfying and disconcerting at the same time.
