What type of conventions does CoG conform to?
Cinema Novo through its authentic aesthetic approach that shows an unbiased insight into the world of exploitation, violence and desperation that is faced by many Brazilians living in the poverty of the favelas

1960 to 1964 was the first phase
What does the second stage of Cinema Novo use?
It used colour and more middle class representations to tackle the anguish that Brazilians felt for Goulart. Filmmakers felt the first phase was only being used by art house students so needed to become more commercial
How is an authentic aesthetic reinforced?
It comes from sourcing local talent and genuine young people from the favelas, the on-location filming, the use of diegetic soundtracks that emphasises the era and Western influence. The immersive cinematography help the audience to shared the lived experience of the favelas.
Where is the film highly stylised?
The use of filters in eras, use of jump cuts and split screens which are all very Hollywood

It has the power to portray important messages and realise what is truly happening in different environments

It allows a platform for the issues that are apparent in Brazil, both on a local and national level and raise awareness. It also impacts through his stories being shown through a series of episodic segments which contribute to the overall narrative storytelling and the response from the audience
