PET scans Flashcards
positron emission tomography
use of gamma photons produced when positrons annihilate with electrons in the body and it maps out biologically active areas in the body
purposes of the PET scan
to study blood flow and metabolism
to analyse certain cancers
to determine how advanced a cancer is
how does a pet scan work
patient is injected with a tracer
radioactive tracer decays and positron is emitted
positron collides with electron
gamma rays go off in opposite directions and gamma detectors picked it up
comparing cat scans and pet scans
pet scans are more expensive
pet scan takes longer cat scan is shorter
-cat scans give detailed tissue and bone structure images
pet scans just show biological functions of a part of a body
